With the onset of the pandemic, education systems suffered a great deal. Architecture colleges all around the globe had to adopt online modes of learning, making it greatly difficult for both the students as well as the teachers. Architectural education is specifically built on the foundation of studio culture wherein a student engages with their peers and faculty and treats the studio like an extension of their home which nurtures their curiosity and develops their young inquisitive minds.
Mental Well-Being
Architects tend to have a habit of working together outdoors, not always in their personal spaces. Due to covid, many dealt with isolation, financial concerns, uncertainty and ad-hoc workspaces which don’t always provide a great working environment. Due to which the importance of designing for well-being became more clear, as designing buildings for healthy people is innately linked to a prosperous natural environment.
Additionally, as students (and for some – even as professionals) in the field of Architecture, we have all experienced working long and odd hours! It not only puts the body in stress but also messes the sleep patterns and puts the mind under substantial stress! Strategies for taking care of oneself have become more important than ever. A good strategy is to identify balance between quantity and quality of time speed doing tasks. Identify what works for you – medication, art therapy, music, nature therapy.
Ways to keep your brain healthy
Site Analysis
One of the most important steps; research and analysis, involves the study of the site. Online learning completely takes away the possibility of being able to do that. Site analysis is one of the most crucial parts before one can begin to design. It lends to the project information and data that allows for a project to be thought of in terms of a real-life scenario as opposed to an imaginary/ hypothetical situation. With the mode of learning now being digital, learners have the option now to go physically in case if the site is nearby or digitally they can visit via google or other mapping websites. For some information, they can connect individuals from the place where the site is located or they can search for the data online (this happens in international competition).
Transition in developing the perspective
Brainstorming with Peers
Group work has suffered a lot but with the new technological innovation like zoom, googlemeet, miro board etc, we have found a way to make it more interactive and efficient. In the field of architecture one has to learn to work within a team and the training for this begins right when a learner enters college. There are numerous subjects in which learners have to work in groups and this imparts essential skills such as learning to work and conduct oneself within a team, thus teaching them the importance and dynamics of teamwork.Â
Transition from group learning to self learning
Composition & Presentation
During the formative years of architecture, a learner is introduced to preparing sheets via physically drafting them. This is done to teach them the basics and only once they’ve mastered the art of physically drafting are they introduced to software. The online mode of teaching partially eliminates the chance of being able to do that, posing a major challenge to the teachers forcing them to rethink the traditional methods of teaching which have developed over the years, at present these methods are replaced with the design thinking and experiential learning approach which enhances the individuals skills much more than that of traditional method.Â
Changes in Presentation
Saving Time, Money and Resources
There are however some positive changes which the students are particularly happy about. The advent of online classes has allowed for online submissions which are a huge relief. This allows the students to work right up till the last moment without having to waste much time in getting their sheets printed. The process of printing takes up essential time that could be used in the completion of work and that has become a huge lifesaver in the current course of events. Having eliminated the need to print sheets, students are also saving a lot of money. If one is aware of the amount of expenditure that goes into the printing of sheets then it is obvious to them how happy a learner must be to be able to save that amount of money.
Economical changes in Education
Model making
For those that love model making it has become a sad affair as model making is a huge part of the course curriculum and is cherished by many. There are many students who enjoy the process of model making and thoroughly relish the outcome of it. It also allows for the opportunity to spend time with friends and partake in an activity that helps people bond over it. Whilst there are those who love it there are also those who much prefer the option of having to make virtual models of their projects online as they are much quicker as well as adept at it. Virtual models are becoming more interactive and learners are having the opportunity to work on different options. Virtual Reality models are the future of model making in architecture and design.Â
The world of architectural education has had its fair share of challenges but since creativity is in the very core of our beings we are all learning to face them in our own ways. Vastukul is an example of one of the solutions that have been thought of as a result of the dynamic situation. It aims to provide children and all those who seek knowledge an online platform with which you can learn remotely from anywhere in this world. Thus, we can see that slowly but surely we are taking steps towards the future that even though it seems bleak at the moment is only different from our expected reality and dealing with it head-on to emerge victorious.
